well, is Scott Robert Ladd's "Java Algorithms" good?
I am interested in starting out my performance reading, and thought it might be good. perhaps you know of another book that would be good.
Thanks.

Hi
I don't know the book you speak of but I use Practical Java Programming by Peter Haggar published by Adisson Wesley or Performance Tuning by Jack Shirasi published by O'Reilly.
I also use Data Structures and Algorithms by Sahni published by McGraw Hill.

Do you know if they have released the second edition of "Practical Java"

Check out http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-03-2001/jw-0323-perfbooks.html for a review of performance books. The algorithm book is a little dated, from 1997.

I haven't started writing it yet. I've been thinking about it...we'll see.

Is 'date' really a factor when talking about algorithms? A quicksort or Dijkstra's 'shortest path algo' are the same in pretty much any language version.
It's like the Design Patterns book, they use C++ as the language of example, but you can still apply the concepts to Java.
