When I prepare for the SCJP, I have several thoughts in my mind:
<code>
1. Just get 71% is enough.
2. Must get more than 90% to feel proud of myself.
3. Score is no importance, i am coming to improve my Java.
</code>
So which one should I put more emphasize, i want to learn more from those who pass the test or are preparing for the test.
Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, the goal 3. is the most suitable one.
At the exam you just do the best you can.
This, of course, does not mean that you should not work hard w/ preparation to the exam.

Hi Guoqiao,
I also support (3). But it also works in my mind that a good score would be something nice!

The bottomline is to pass the exam. Nothing more.
But, ofcourse, the score reflects your hold on the subject. Think that way and prepare thoroughly. Study hard.
Correct me if I am wrong

In response to your first thought, the last I heard the passing score is 61%, not 71%.

I am surprised that so many people suggested option 3.
For me, passing the certification exam and being a good java programmer are not quite the same thing.
In the company I am working right now ( as a co-op student ), none of the programmers/designers have the certificate.
Once during a design meeting, my manager was asked for the maximum possible int value, nobody in the meeting was able to give a firm answer without checking the reference, so I think all the programmers/designers will lose their jobs if SCJP is required for the work.
I am not saying all the people working at my place are incompetent, in fact, they are REALLY good indeed. We are doing some hardcore middle/EJB server which requires a LOT of knowledge about Java and these guys are just doing fine.
So here is my two cents:
.Study hard to pass the test, 61% is good enough, your resume needs it

.Pratice with real project to improve your java skill.
BTW, I myself are not certified yet, I am trying to get the certification and learn java at same time.

As to the passing score <code>61%</code> or <code>71%</code>,
I am a little bit confused by all the message here,
please refer to:
<code> http://www.sun.com.sg/education/certification/suncertprogjava.htm
</code>
Inside it said the passing score is <code>71%</code>. :-(
Where can i find more updated info?
Thanks.

Uh-huh. But I got second thoughts about the time since Sun US pages tells that time is two hours while FIN pages tells that it is 1h30min?!

Hi,
You goal should be to score high in the test.If you do that with some application of Java, it implicitly means you would gain better understanding of Java.
So score more than 90% in the test and follow it up by developing small applications that would lead to better understanding of designing OO systems.
Hope this helps,
Sandeep

Thank you, Desai. You really gave good advice to me.
By the way, by taking the exam, or by doing real-world project, which one you think will be better improve our java skill?

Hi Guoqiao,
When I started with Java, I was aiming a high score at SCJP2.I managed to get 93%.That was more than one year back, when we really didn't have as much support on the Certification as we have now.
However, this had given me confidence to work on real assignments.Infact achieving a high score doesn't mean that you can be implement a successful real-world OO project.
For real-world projects, more than Java (or any OO language!), you have to be a good OO designer.
The real-world project broadly consists three different phases - Analysis, Design and Construct.By clearing SCJP with a high score, you can certainly add value in the Construct phase of the project.However,this doesnot consititute to even 30% of actual project time.The actual time is spent on analysis and design of Systems.
So if you want to improve your OO skills, you have to spend more time in the first two phases of the project.The need of UML and Patterns would be emphasized in the first two phases of the project.The high SCJP2 score should help you to grasp the concepts of applying UML and Patterns in the initial two phases of the project, which will make you a good OO developer.
Hope this helps,
Sandeep
