I would like to know if there is a performance gain one way or the other depending on which method I use to gain access to and read from property (.properties) files?
regards,

Don't know the answer, but I'll ask another question ... How often does this happen? I usually read properties files once at startup and a minor difference between two techniques doesn't matter. Unless we're reading thousands of files or megabytes of data, I'd write whatever is easiest for humans to understand.
(Ooops, "once at startup" is not quite complete. On a server, I'd have a way to purge my cache and re-read from disk without recycling the server, but I'd expect usage to be uncommon.)

point well taken, i will only be doing this once and furthermore it will be a singleton - so why the worry with what the performance will be
thanks
