I'm always told that Java on the iSeries (IBM, successor of the AS400) is very slow. Has anyone got any experience with Java on the AS400 ?
And is there some sort of miracle solution to this bad performance ?

No experience here, but Google for "IBM iseries java" and the first link is this IBM Redbook on Java and WebSphere Performance on IBM.

Very old Models of the AS/400 like Model 150 or 6xx have very slow processors, so this boxes are not usefull for any java workload. But newer machines like 270, 7xx, 8xx whith operating system greater or equal to V5R1 performs very well with java.
Some hints:
Install the newest Java Group PTF (Programm Temporary Fix)
Create native machine code for heavy used Java classes with crtjvapgm
