Hi, I am trying to run -server mode on my J2SE with jdk 1.5 It give me this error: no 'server'JVM at 'C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\server\jvm.dll'.

Do i need to download J2EE or i can still run server and client modes on J2SE platform. If yes, what should i be doing?

Thank you

In the release notes for JDK 1.5.0, there's a section on Virtual Machines. If you have a server-class machine (2CPUs and 2GB of memory), the VM is automatically switched to server mode. There is no server mode for Windows OSs.

Is there any way if not J2SE, perhaps J2EE to run server mode?

J2EE is an API built on top of the J2SE. It does not have anything to do with the features of the JVM.
Have a look at the Java Platform Performance for more information about how to measure performance and tune the JVM.

But the link you provided says

"On all platforms, the JDK comes with an implementation of the Java virtual machine called the Java HotSpot Server VM"

According to http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=136&threadID=289426 you should probably try a clean reinstall...

Thank you Ilja,

I new that i should be able to run -server mode.
Now, the only reason i was avoiding to reinstall again was that i have made some measurements for client mode and spent some time on it. Reinstall the new version means i would have to go back and run and make measurements again.
Currently i am on jdk1.5.0_05 and updated version from sun is is 1.5.0_06.
I hope there will be no much difference.

I have moved server directory from ...\Java\jdk1.5.0_05\jre\bin\server
to ...\Java\jre1.5.0_05\bin\here

It works fine now. For some reason it was missing the server directory in that directory.

Thanks for help and i am saved from reinstalling it again.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
