It would really depend on what other things the JVM is doing that you're comparing against. In a great many applications that access databases or network connections, the overhead of writing GC info to standard out will be very negligible. In some other applications that are entirely CPU-bound and generate a large number of objects, verbose GC may have a noticeable effect. Really, the best way to answer a question like this is to try it both ways, and measure the results. It's very hard to give a general answer for this, and easy to just try it and see.
