Hello All

We have high cpu usage as the number of user increase for a hardware of 2+2 boxes, cluster environment. We are trying to increase the cpu to 4+4 boxes.
will the performance be better by increasing the CPU count.

Thanks in advance

Maybe... As always you need to find what is causing the bottleneck. Your solution could be as simple as tweaking some code. The jamon link below is a good start for profiling/monitoring your application:

There is no thumb rule for telling that.
Increasing CPUs will increase performance if your application can utilize the CPUs.
For instance if your application has only a single thread that does all the work then having a 4 or 8 or 16 CPU box will give the same performance as 1 CPU.
If your application has 4 threads that run completely parallely to each other and does not wait on any resource like monitor, I/O then having a 4 CPU box will boost the performance as compared to a 2 CPU machine.

So, as steve suggested, you need to profile your application to find out whether it will actually benefit by increasing the CPUs

Just a word of CAUTION!!!

Blindly increasing the CPU power might even degrade the performance if your application is already into IO bound and bound to context switching.

You might end up seeing heavy context switching and might even observe degraded performance if you blindly increase the CPUs.

It is best to profile and figure out if it makes sense to increase the horse power of the system.
