look at the latest wps_**.log in $WPS_HOME/PortalServer/log

at the very top of the file is something like the following

for example..

IBM WebSphere Portal 5.1.0.1

moreover, the log file will also tell you what ifixes you've installed (if any)

eq..

2007.03.16 13:30:04.452 I com.ibm.wps.services.product.ProductServiceImpl printInstalledFixes
No fixpacks have been installed.
The following interim fixes have been installed:
PK06686 (Creation of VP-specific URLs in servlet filters does not work)
PK07056 (Retrieval of virtual portal object ID from URL fails)
PK08297 (JSR 168 URL generation does not consider fragment id capability)
PK12728 (Sporadic NullPointerException occurs when administrating pages.)
PK14889 (Changes to pages are not visible because of refresh problems of the portal content model.)
