Portlet is a web application?

I have googled the definition of Portlets but still not quite sure of what exactly a Portlet is.

From what I read, a portlet is equal to one web application and you can have several web applications (portlets) each having their own small non-overlapping window (or frame?) making up one big window or web page?
For example one big window or web page could show discussion forum in one porlet small non overlapping window, email in another small non overlapping portlet window and a traffic report in another small non overlapping portlet window which all makes up one big window or web page?

Would this big window with all the portlets make up one portal page??

I think you're very much on the right track.

I put together a little "What is a portal?" multimedia presentation that you can view on my website. Many people find it very helpful, minus the annoying Canadian accent.

What is a portal? What is a portlet?

And yes, the page on which a bunch of portlets appear is refered to as a 'portal page,' and the job of selecting which portlets to appear, and organizing the page is referred to as 'portal page aggregation' and is performed by the portal server on which all the portlets run.
