Role of Sockets in develpoing a Chat application

I am developing a chat application and I want to know in what way sockets play role in developing this?? Is there any other technology that is having edge over Sockets to develope a Chat application??

I would think you can use RMI. OTOH RMI is just a wrapper around sockets

I think Tim's suggestion is the ideal way to do it.
I can't imagine writing a chat application in 1999 that didn't involve sockets.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
