Hi
I have done plug-in detection and it's easiest done on the client side using JavaScript or even VbScript. (not Java Applets or Servlets)
You may want to check a message base / site that specializes in these technologies for more information.
Remember also that Java.equals(JavaScript) is false!
Now if you are talking about the Java plugin.. well I think my advice still stands. You can detect these settings with JavaScript and then send the person to a page OR download it automatically.
