It depends how you want to use it. If (as in your example) you want to use ftp via a browser URL, first of all the FTP server has to be there. you get errors when you use the URL 'ftp://yahoo.com' because as far as I know there is no anonymous FTP server called 'yahoo.com'. If you chose an anonymous FTP server that was available, you would get it. Try typing 'ftp://ftp.apple.com' into your browser URL line and you should get a reply (ftp.apple.com is an example of the name of an FTP server). BTW, usually FTP servers are in the form 'ftp.some.domain.name'
I hope that helps.

That all depends on what you are looking to download. Some of my regular ones are ...
Imperial College (University of London) Dept of Computing -- swallow.doc.ic.ac.uk
HP FTP server -- ftp.hp.com
GNU FTP server -- ftp.gnu.org
... but it all varies according to what I'm looking for.
There are some good html interfaces to FTP sites too, many of the ftp sites have corresponding websites (For example, the Software Porting And Archive Centre for HP-UX in the U.K. -- http://hpux.connect.org.uk/ ), and there will often be mirror sites (that is, a replica of websites) at a good FTP site near you.
If you know the name of the file you're looking for, try doing a search through one of the archieplexform sites (go to google.com and do a search for 'archieplexform') - archie searches for files in ftp sites and can be very helpful in finding what you're looking for.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
