I have a class that connects to a certain machine and port, ready to send and receive. I'm wondering if I'll run into trouble if I try to connect to the same machine and port with a modified class, while the original class is connected.
The reason is the original class is in production, and I'd like to test some modifications without interfering with the currently running application.

It all depends on the server. Does it allow for multiple connections in a threadsafe manner? Will the changes in the client send something to the server which could impact production?
If the server allows mutilple, threadsafe connections and none of the changes can impact production then yes, it is possible.
IMHO there should ALWAYS be a distinct break between your production and development systems. Too often what appears to be a minor change that wouldn't have any adverse side effects....DO.

Thanks Carl, I'll look into those issues. I agree with the separation between development and production, but sometimes it's just not possible.
