The docs say 'This class represents an Internet Protocol (IP) address.'

Merlin (sdk 1.4) is pretty exciting for networking, it has
Inet4Address, Inet6Address, InetSocketAddress as well as InetAddress. I think you get the basics here
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
