I have an unsigned JMF applet that requires me to set a java.net.SocketPermission in the .java.policy file. I was wondering if there was a way in the applet to set this policy so that I do not have to alter the policy file. The applet should remain unsigned.

No. That's impossible. Java security will prevent it from exceeding the permissions that have been granted to untrusted applets in the policy file. A backdoor would undermine the entire security mechanism. - Peter
