Can someone point me in the right direction to get started implementing a simple FTP client using Java?
Thanks!

Hi David,
I am going to email you an example from Special Edition Using Java 2 Enterprise Edition by Mark Wutka from Que Publications. Mark has graciously agreed to let us link to these examples, but at the moment they are not on his site. I would post the code here, but it is over 600 lines. Despite the size, it is very easy to follow. If you are not familiar with the FTP protocol, then you can learn about it here RFC 959. Of course that's your stale technical white paper and there is really no need to read nor understand everything in it to interact with an FTP server. All of the internet protocols are plain text, so just like romance, you just have to know what to say and when to say it. You also should have a good understanding of internet status codes. You can learn about these here Status Codes

I found this excellent Java Client download at
Java FTP Client
Both the source file and jar files are available for free download (although the author accepts donations through paypal). The code processes the FTP return codes and throws exceptions for bad return codes.
