effects of resizing using different layout managers

I have seen in a couple of mock exams questions about the effects of resizing the window on the contents--depending on the layout manager used.
I think the question was asking which layout managers might change their handling of contained components when the container is resized (going from honoring the component's preferred size to not honoring it, or vice versa)...can anyone tell me what the effects of resizing components using the different layout managers would be?
