you should check out the
FTPBean. thats what I used for FTP for java. It even has an example to get you started.

I do vote for Jakarta's Common Net, as mentioned by anjan... They are open-source and carefully managed by the famous Jakarta Project. So if you need any help in understanding the API, you can easily contact them. And you will see the the packages are really really easy to adapt to our environment...
