I am fiddling with getting a local server running. I had it running using port 8080 or 8000 or some such normally www/html port. I changed that to port 80 and the server gets thrown off the system at boot, so I am going to select some port(s) to start servers on, I am thinking of using the private ports (65535 - 49152) vs the mail ports vs common http port numbers. The O'Reilly book on Java Network Programming states that Java is an ideal interface or wrapper for developing protocols. I am intent on doing this as well as implementing a standalone server based on the nio sample, with I hope both a standared http server based on the sample docs as well a mail client/server which implements store and forward for a thinly selected population of emails to a few narrowly selected sites, screening out all but simple text-based traffic.
Any comments welcome.
