RMI Problems

I've modified an application to use RMI. It works great on my internal network at home. But when I attempt to access from outside on the internet, the client runs after a 30 second wait, but there's no data coming through. Whenever I click on a client side button, the 30 second wait starts again and the client recovers, but still no data. The data I'm expecting consists of String Arrays and booleans.
I'm running a d-link router which I have set to let ALL services through (orion and tomcat web servers run fine). I also have Zone Alarm running and I have it set to let a range of ip's through (the remote site I was at was from that range).
Do I need to serialize the String Arrays? Is d-link not letting port 1099 through?
