An apllication is said distributed when your applications are running on more than one jvm.

I don't know that I'd quite agree with that. A ditributed application would have many parts, but not all parts would need to be Java. A web application consisting of the browser, application server and database is distributed but only the application server is likely to be Java. There is the possibility the aplpication server is clustered, but even without a cluster it is still a distributed application.

I'd probably say 'multiple processes' rather than 'multiple jvms'. Ideally it would also run on separate hardware, but this would be an aim but not a necessity. eg we develop a distributed application, but during development we run all the parts locally. That it the database, JMS, app server, corba server, and the three individaul java applications (which can be individually clustered.

David thanks for correcting me. I will agree with you. Multiple JVMs scenario is applicable only with java. What you have said is correct as distributed application can be anything like c, c++ where we will use CORBA.
