Hi,

I am pretty new to LDAP, just know LDAP stands for Light Weight Directory Access Protocol. Basically I want to know why was this Protocol introduced and do they provide any specifications for implementing this Protocol.

Also can someone suggest me a startup tutorial for LDAP

Thanks,
Sridevi

There's a whole series of RFCs, which are linked from this one. An introduction can be found here.

The second link, LDAPman, is where I would have sent you.

Typically you would use the JNDI/LDAP (javax.naming/javax.naming.ldap) API for programming LDAP in Java (tutorial and information here). That API is rather tricky though, so to avoid common pitfalls and simplifying the programming I would recommend the LdapTemplate framework.

Note that you will still need to know the basics of JNDI/LDAP in order to use LdapTemplate, but the framework helps you ignore the tricky details and focus on what you really want to do.
