I download jsf-blank.zip from
http://www.coreservlets.com/JSF-Tutorial/#Section1

unzipped in tomcat/webapps/

startup tomcat

use ie to browse it. http://localhost:8080/jsf-blank/

but the following error appears:
------------------------------------------------------------------
type Status report

message /jsf-blank/welcome.faces

description The requested resource (/jsf-blank/welcome.faces) is not available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

what is this welcome.faces? I can not find anywhere?

normally jsf files have the .faces extension so that the faces servlet mapping can be configured to process all requests meeting that format. They are basically .jsp pages renamed to .faces to determine which resources are processed as jsf.

Actually, there are no .faces files. That is just a mapping done in the web.xml so that when you type:

http://localhost:8080/app/welcome.faces

It will go find welcome.jsp and have the Faces Servlet process it. So you still have a .jsp file.

Or "probably" you may eliminate the need of "faces" stuff completely by simply directing all request to FacesServlet.

But only if you are sure that you wont use any other servlet to cater any request.

P.S. I have never tried this, but this should also work I guess.

Yes, I get something about .faces files.

But why does this error appear?

How to handle it?
