I need to validate three inputText fields. All I need to validate is the length of the field and whether and whether there has been input or not. I have the validation working with one catch. It prints the validation messages in an alert box. The only way I am able to get it to work is to use h:inputText tags rather than af:inputText tags. Is there a way to do it where I can still use af:inputText tags. I have tried every single example I have found on the web, including using <af:panelLabelAndMessage. The way my code looks right now is like this:

<af:inputText id="sgLongName" value="#{editGroupBean.lname}" required="true" requiredMessageDetail="Please enter a value"
valueChangeListener="#{editGroupBean.updateLname}" >
<af:validateByteLength maximum="40" maximumMessageDetail="Long name field can only be 40 characters"/>
<af:message for="securityGroupLongName" />

Any ideas?
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
