Hi everyone,
Wow, this site is really great!!! Just wondering is there any way I can sync this forum with an offline news reader like Outlook Express? I don't think I can finish all the posts here during day time and would like to do it after working hour.
Please do let me know if you have any way to do so.
Thanks.

Hi guys,
Just wondering is there a rules that don't encourage us to use offline news reader to access to this site? I really like to know as I like to do some reading on this forum when I am on the road.
Would appreciate anyone to thrown some light on this matter.
Thanks.

I don't believe it can be done.
Perhaps this is a feature we'll consider as we develop our new forums software. Though, I doubt it'll ever take very high priority as I'm not aware of very many users that want this ability.

In the past we briefly discussed sending out email copies of posts or email digests of posts.
Another possibility would be to have RSS feeds of posts.
However, there are over 300 topics that have been posted to in the last 14 hours (that is just topics - some of those topics may have had multiple postings). We also had over 27,000 unique visitors on Monday alone.
So no matter whether it was handled via newsreader / email / RSS, we would have to have quite a lot of user configurable options just so the recipient doesnt drown in the amount of data we send out.
A big problem with the newsreader concept would be those people who only go online once a day - if they were subscribing to the forums which have the most traffic, then they could easily try to download 500+ topics at one time, which would seriously stress out our servers.
And, as mentioned in the other topic, we would not want people to be replying via newsreader or email - that leads to duplicate replies, and would change the whole nature of the ranch.
The RSS feed might be doable though.
Regards, Andrew

Hi guys,
First of all, thank you for your reply and explanation.
Secondly (no offence to those who supported this), I don't really like the idea of replying thru email. Like many of you said so, this may just create a lot of unnecessary duplication.
Thirdly, I only realised this after I posted the above message. After going thru a thread where JavaRanch owners going thru some pain collecting donation and explaining the server situation, I think I will stop asking for news reader support. The amount of traffic may just somehow kill the server.
And lastly, about the RSS feed, it would be something very interesting. Are you guys discussing it here in this forum? Where can I find the thread to read more about it?
Once again, thanks guys for having this great forum.
Cheers.
