We have a forum just for discussing ORM tools such as Hibernate. I'm moving this topic there for you.

Hi john,
When I first saw Hibernate's website I thought the same. However the truth is Hibernate is just a ORM tool and that is it. There is NO need to use a J2EE sever.
I only started using it a few weeks ago and haev found it a very useful tool.
Have fun.
Chris.

Does Hibernate provide any transaction management or results caching feature to improve performance?

Yes, Hibernate implements caching. Hibernate supports transactions by delegating the responsibility to the JDBC driver.
By the way, Hibernate has excellent documentation for an open source project. See http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/reference/html/transactions.html and http://www.hibernate.org/hib_docs/reference/html/performance.html for details.
