Transitive means that some state can cascade throughout your object graph. For example, if one object becomes persistent, some of the directly associated objects should also be made persitent. The same for delete, reattach to a persitence context (Session.update()), and other persistence manager operations. Hibernate has very fine grained transitive persistence features, an important aspect for an object/relational mapping tool.

Transitive Persistence - If object A is persisted and it refers to Persistent object B, then object B is automatically persisted. If Persistent object C also refers to B, the record for object B in the database is not duplicated.
