An object that has an identity in the database and is associated with a Hibernate Session is in the "Persistent" state.

An object that has an identity in the database, but is not associated with a Hibernate Session is in the "Detached" state.

Any object that does not have an identity in the database is considered to be in the "Transient" state.

If you can, pick up the "Hibernate in Action" book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/193239415X/qid=1112226163/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/104-5975979-8481512), and read through 4.1, "The Persistence Lifecycle"
