I was reading an introductory tutorial on Hibernate. It says it eliminates the need to write SQL queries. But still it uses HQL...so we are still writing queries right??

HQL is just one option and it is not really SQL. HQL, in my opinion, is just one way for people familiar and comfortable w/ SQL syntax to query objects.

Object Oriented programmers may be more interested in the QBC (Query By Critera). Using QBC you're effectively creating queries using objects.

Hibernate is quite flexible w/ full SQL support and features you'll find in object databases.

I am also new to hibernate but after some tutorial and practice i discovered that HQL is more simple and also it has a java-like syntax. Also since it is integrated with java, you can take whole object (it can be any object) with one command. It is more high level than sql in my opinion.
