Hibernate is an object relational mapping tool.Java is object oriented and our back end's are relational so we need to map these together. In normal way we need to code a lot, here is the importance of Hibernate. It supports Java's assosiation, reflection and very usefull for jdk1.5
Previously there is a tool called iBATIS,it's also an O/R Mapping tool.

And we can't compare hibernate with Struts or any other MVC arcitecture. Both are different.

1)we use hibernate, because we programm object-orientated (e.g. java) and access data through relational databases.
2)jsf, struts etc. are not languages., they are frameworks, which help us building applications from a highler level of abstraction. they are implemented by programming-languages.
3)jsf, struts: apple. hibernate: pear. both taste nice but DIFFERENTLY
