Strange SQL statements for JPA!

It appears that JPA wants something other than the SQL select statements I'm familiar with. Can someone tell me the name of this syntax and maybe a reference to the documentation?

Its a javax.persistence.Query.

The query language used in JPA is called Java Persistence Query Language (JP QL). A beginning reference can be found in most vendor product doc, and a free chapter on using it can be downloaded here.
