I found this article a while ago. It explains how SOAP has been adopted/modified to provide the ebXML messaging layer. ebXML seems very interesting to me, although the big problem with EDI standards is getting enough critical mass. SOAP is much more modest in its goals, but in that sense, perhaps of more (immediate) use.
