Next big thing or next big hype

Interesting that just as there's a new forum here for WebServices, there's a feature section from CNet:

Just thought I'd put this out there for anyone who doesn't normally read News.com. It looks interesting as a broad introduction for the unaware, at least. (I haven't fully read it yet.)

Thanks looks like a great link.
The question "Is it the next big thing or the next big hype?" is very apt. One so often see out IT world invent new technologies to boost revenu. Web Services make alot of bussinness sense though. We are even implementing a "web service" inside our bank. Where our internal customers use our services. No I'm not on the project

Microsoft seems to be making the biggest investment in the hopes of web services being the next best thing. This URL shows what they think will be big.

(You know, if it was not for a continuous stream of "next best thing" there would not be much room for computer book authors)

And without the 'next big thing', I think a lot of us would be out of jobs.
I was self-trained as a web-page coder back when the only tools were vi or notepad... and suddenly, everyone's fifteen year old is "a webmaster" with Frontpage. ASP saved my job back then, and when that got old, Java and J2EE were there...
By the by, since I started this little thing with a snippet from News.com, they've posed a commentary this afternoon on Web Services now as well. It can be found at http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-201-7819890-0.html?tag=lh

This looks like a job for .... legal tender! It says so right in this tiny ad:
