Can someone give a brief explanation of a common web service implementation with java? What technologies are common (JSP, Servlets, SOAP, XML, etc.)? Can you get them for free (i.e. open source)? What is a common architecture? Etc.
Also, are there any good publications that answer these questions?
Thanks!

Webservices is just basically Java. (you can use other languages too).
Since there is no visual component JSP is not reqd. SOAP has its own servlet implmentation so servltes are not reqd. SOAP is XML based but the XML is transparent to the programmer- so you can do without XML too. But if you use UDDI- you will have to use XML- but once again the UDDI kits can very easily take care of the XML part.
