Does anyone know of any published information regarding the performance of HTTP(S) vs. other transports such as FTP or SMTP?
My boss is worried that the web services that I'm writing will not perform well with HTTPS.

Unfortunately, you're comparing apples and oranges here. HTTP(s) is a request/response protocol -- it's more naturally suited to RPC style web services. SMTP and FTP are more naturally suited to document-oriented web services (asynchronous).
Now, HTTP(s) will be slower than straight HTTP due to the encryption, but there are many hardware solutions to that...
