Can you return a "String[][]" from a SOAP-RPC call?

I've experimented with many different return types including all possible primatives, single dimension arrays and user defined types (simple, nested and tree structure). I tried, although I've never seen it, to pass back a two dimensional array of Strings...
public String[][] getTwoDimArray()
...but haven't been able to get it to work.
Can anyone confirm for me that is not possible given Soap encoding?

I tried to call a method returning 2D arraytype from a .Net client... Not been able to get it.Although user-defined and primitive single D arrays work OK.

Thanks Sam,
That's been my experience so far too.
