A good place to start would be by downloading Apache Axis from www.apache.org. There is a tutorial on the Axis Website.

Try the following link to get started with
Webservices on Tomcat, axis and jboss app server
(pretty cool combination frm open source eh !!!)
http://www.csd.abdn.ac.uk/~bscharla/teaching/mtp_software/jboss/jboss-netGuide.shtml
also try apache axis from their site.
Happy Coding

I agree with Kyle and Prashant: Axis comes with good documentation. For instructions on how to create and deploy web-services on Axis for an entire J2ee application, see Developing Java Web Services, by Ramesh Nagappan, Wiley Press, 2002.

Ditto. IMO, the tutorials of appserver and IDE vendors are no good -- you can create a web service and a client for it in less than 5 minutes by following the click-this-and-that instructions but what you get from that "experience" is worth $0.
I've always preferred selecting a reasonably "low-tech" product/implementation, often open source, and playing with its tutorials -- you get to see under the hood and avoid using vendors' proprietary features. Afterwards it's a lot easier to move on to using the GUI web service builder type of products when you know what's happening behind the scenes.
