I'm wondering what method Adobe Acrobat Reader uses to check for updates b/c I need to do that in my app. Could I implement a simple web service in Java for my client apps to use to check to see if there's an update available, and if so, it could return the location of where to download it from? This seems so simple, but I really don't know for sure what methods programs currently use to do these sorts of things. Maybe all they do is connect to a server socket and send some ASCII with their version number and get some text back over that socket. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Whether you use web services or not, I'd suggest using HTTP as the transport to get past the corporate firewalls.
