Do I need to know WSDL to use J2EE webservices ? WSDL looks complicated as of now.

I would say no, you don't need to "know" WSDL. You can start with the service implementation, generate a WSDL automatically based on that implementation, and then generate the client based on the already-generated WSDL. Naturally it helps in problem solving if you know WSDL.

Lasse nailed it. Be aware of WHY its there and how to use it, but don't sweat the details too much (unless you want to work on WS containers and app servers).

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
