Hi Kathy and Bert,
Since the new exam SCJWSD is round the corner, have you planned to write (or already in progress) the book HeadFirst SCJWSD?
If so, when will it be released?
Looking forward to it.
Nick.

Don't hold you breath - an excerpt from any good study guide for SCDJWS follows.
For now it seems even less likely as more and more people realize that web services are overly complex and may have developed in the wrong direction.
WS* vs. REST / Intelligence vs. Wisdom

Excerpt:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not that its likely that there will be a "Head First Web Services":

Head First book for SCJA

Originally posted by Bert Bates:
...there are a couple of issues with the web services exam:

1 - It's not as popular as the SCJA
2 - We don't like web services very much. We helped Sun in the early planning stages for their course and with the exam objectives - it was a nightmare! Planning that normally takes a couple of weeks, took almost 6 months. Perhaps this set of technologies has started to settle down a bit, but they have always seemed to me to have a kind of amorphous, hard-to-pin-down sort of feeling about them.
3 - It would have to be a bigger than usual HF book - and they're already big - so it's a much bigger risk in that way too.
Anyway, we are always waiting and watching for th right time...

I remember seeing somewhere Bert saying that "Kathy and I are a big fan of web services..." So if this is going to be true, then there should be atleast a consideration from the authors for a HFWS book.

There is no new exam. The comments (2005-Nov-12) date back to the creation of the original exam (in 2004).

That could just as easily been: "Kathy and I aren't a big fan of web services..." which would be more in line with the position taken in: Head First book for SCJA:

We don't like web services very much.

Even Tim Bray (Director of Web Technologies at Sun Microsystems) has become increasingly frustrated with the current state of web services technology (WS-Angst; Bray's opinions are his own, and neither Sun nor any other party necessarily agrees with them).

See also Tim Bray on Rails, REST, XML, Java, and More:

Look at amazon.com. They are doing multiple tens of million of web-services transactions a day through their web services API, they offered a SOAP interface and they also offered a simple plain old xml interface. 90% of the traffic is going through the simple xml interface.

REST, as in Take It Easy

I am with Nicholas, Ken and Reagan! Nothing would make me happier than to point my browser to Amazon.com one day and see: "Head First Web Services - Passing the Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services Exam!" I know that I would be willing to pay US $85.00 and I would probably buy 2 of them and donate one to someone at my work. Our systems are all being converted over to SOA.

Please, Please, Please consider it further, Bert and Kathy (if you guys are reading this)! Your other books are so awesome and WebServices are becoming more popular. I know you guys can do it!

In the mean, time I bought Marc Hansen's "SOA Using Java Web Services." I see why it was 7th at JavaOne. Great book for learning web services. I recommend it to all. But it serves a totally different purpose than an actual certification exam study guide, nor does it have the coolness and hipness of the famous HFSJ book. But it is better than any other SOA/WS book being sold right now that I can find.

I will still continue to hope and pray for a HF SCDJWS Study guide.
