I tried to post some very innocent looking code today, and got back a page to the effect that the submitted post contained some HTML elements and could not be poeted. Huh?

You were trying to post in MD, where we have HTML unabled since many people like to make use of it. Unfortunately the UBB code which handles this is a bit buggy, and doesn't do well at recognizing what's not really HTML. One common problem is that most (all, I think) < symbols must be replaced with "&lt;" to make UBB happy. There are others which I forget. So for most forums where code is posted frequently, we disable HTML precisly because it's more important for people to be able to post code easily. In MD it's the other way around, since people rarely post code there.
I had moved your post to Programming Diversions just before seeing this post here, so that should solve your problem for now at least.
