Is it common to need to write a custom bean serializer, for most applications, for Axis?

Depends. As far as I can tell if your are looking for an interoperable remoting mechanism you should avoid them like the plague. See the sections starting at What Axis can send via SOAP with restricted Interoperability.

If you are looking for a Java remoting mechanism Axis/SOAP with serializers can do the job (especially if conservation of custom Java types is important to you) but you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't also consider:
  • RMI
  • Hessian (Binary over HTTP)
  • Burlap (XML over HTTP)
  • Spring HTTP invoker
  • as any one of them might be a better fit for your requirements. (See Considerations when choosing a technology)
