The Web Services FAQ links to a number of articles showing how to develop both client and server side, and also points to numerous other useful resources. I like this article, but the others are similarly short and easy to follow.

You'll need a WS engine like Apache Axis. That's built as a web application, so you'll need a servlet container like Tomcat as well.

To get started with Web Services, I'd check out the JAX-RPC tutorial from Sun:

Getting Started with Web Services

Well, you could always wait for the certification book that's coming out:

Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services Study Guide

I recommend keeping copies of the following two books on hand for a reference. They really tend to fill in the gaps. Plus, they've been out for a while, so you can usually find some really good and discounted copies on amazon:

O'Rielly Book: Java Web Services by David A. Chappell, Tyler Jewell

J2EE Web Services by Richard Monson-Haefel

There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get past it, you'll be amazed at how elegant and powerful the standard is.

Cheers!

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
