New To Web Services

I am new to web services and have no clue for wsdl/messages//web services etc though I am very good java programmer/xml. I want to learn web services from scratch.

Any idea how should I approach web services. Any practical approach would be appreciated like some example which I could deploy on my localhost and play around.

Any online example is given for beginners ??
