Hello, Damon, I am very thrilled to see such a resource for using Pay Pal! I am developing a subscription web site, and have been exploring the use of Pay Pal's services to automate this process for my site, using PHP/MySQL.

Does your book only describe Pay Pal's services or does it also provide scenarios for using them? I guess I really want to know how it will assist me in choosing, setting up and coding the entire process to get things up and running.

Sincerely,
Darren Brooks

If you're working on a subscription-based service, there are two choices for you. One is our classic Subscriptions product that has been around for years. This is covered in Chapter 3 of the book. Just a few lines of HTML and you can create a basic subscription agreement with customers.

In June, we are releasing new APIs for recurring billing that provide a slightly better customer experience, and more control of the subscription itself. The APIs will allow for suspending and reactivating subscriptions, as well as modifying them. You can modify with the classic Subscriptions product, but it's not very straightforward (the process is covered in the book though).

Recurring Billing APIs aren't in the book since we didn't have them at the time of writing, but general API usage is covered in Chapter 6 and you can get the operation-specific parameters on how the Recurring Billing stuff works on the PayPal Integration Center, once the feature is live.

Thanks for your reply.

It will be nice to have all the information in one resource, instead of the way I learned what I have so far, by scouring Pay Pal for info. Even though it's there, it still took a while to find, as well as a learning curve.

I didn't realize you worked at Pay Pal; I look forward to reading the book as well as the updated recurring payments stuff at Pay Pal.

Sincerely,

Yeah, it's pretty easy to get frustrated if you're looking for info on the main paypal.com site. Most of the developer-focused stuff is condensed at the Integration Center, www.paypal.com/integration

The book presents it all in a cohesive fashion, plus adds more examples and analysis
