JavaRanch continues to grow! Jes' like a little calf, we've been havin' growing pains. You may have gotten some o' them con-sarned 503 messages yourself, lately, because poor, overworked Bessie just can't handle the load.
This week we're having a special JavaRanch Fundraiser so as we kin get a new server to replace the old girl. Our friends at McGraw-Hill have pledged matching funds and donated some free books that we can hand out, so everybody's a winner! Head over here to read all about it.
Thanks for listenin'!

Actually Ernest, the idea is to keep the old server and we'll now have two servers.
At first, we'll put all of the forums on one and everything else on the other. But once we get the new forum software running, I think it would be wise to do a little distributed computing ...

Paul, any way to donate for people that don't have cheques (like just about everyone outside the US) and no access (or refuse to use) to Paypal?
I don't trust PP (the entire service themselves, not your small part in it) and as you will understand financial transactions without trust are impossible.
I could send cash, but preferably Euros as it's hard for me to get to a bank (only bank I could get to without taking a day off at the office is the one at the airport which at least is open weekends and that would cost me $15+ just to get there and back, plus the exchange fees).

I see a bunch of paypal stuff in my mailbox. Cool! Will check it tonight, after work.
Jeroen,
How about a postal money order? I get a check about once every three months from amazon uk and my bank charges me just three bucks to convert it to US$ and deposit it. I suppose if you sent a postal money order in euros, I could do a similar thing. At worst, I could go to the post office and they will probably convert it.
I used to have a merchant account, but I ditched it because paypal was cheaper and so much easier.
I've heard of folks not liking paypal. Do you have a suggestion for an alternative?

I don't like PayPal 'cause they don't accept my Amex Corporate... Otherwise I have no rowl with them. The only other "seemingly trustworthy" service I'm aware of is 2checkout.com but I haven't really used their services so I can't say more than that.

PayPal takes a few percent plus 30 cents. Therefore, the theoretical minimum amount you can transmit through paypal is about 31 cents. Of course, that would just break even. A typical contribution is more like 10 dollars and up.

We haven't made the testing site public yet. However, it is roughly based on MVNForum, an Open Source J2EE based discussion forum solution.

I'll see what I can do. Living where I live the nearest postoffice that can send money orders is also about an hour away (there's only about 180.000 people in this city ), but maybe I can get some cash somewhere for you in USD or (if not certainly) Euros.
Exchange fees for those should be the same as the combined cost of sending a money order (which costs money to send as well as receive, talk about being charged twice for the same transaction).

I think that sending cash in the mail is risky. Plus, it encourages people to open your mail! Could be a cash prize!
I think the reason paypal doesn't do AmEx is because AmEx charges more. Plus there is the rule that you cannot favor one card over another, or over cash. So if they took AmEx, they would have to take the same, greater amount out of everything!
What about the yahoo offering? I wonder what it is like?

Hooooooo Doggy! We're up to $3326.66!!! Half of that is direct donations ($1663.33) and the other half is gonna be matched by McGraw-Hill/Osborne.
Our goal is $4000, so we're just 336.67 shy of our goal! We're so close!!!

Whelp, there are over 25 people who have contributed $50 or more and get a copy of the book. So if you contribute now and are thinking "I sure hope I get a copy of that book!" well, um, I sure hope that getting your funds matched is reward enough.

Actually, PayPal takes AmEx. They don't take AmEx Corporate. At least they don't take my AmEx Corporate -- that's what their support told me a year or two back (I tried again this week but that still seems to be the case).

At last someone interested in my mail
I've sent cash several times in the past with people accepting only PP, never had a problem. The trick is to make certain it's not visible as such when shining a light through the envelope (which is easier to do than it sounds) and certainly not make it look like anything of value is in there.
Will get some cash infusion next week (selling some old computer parts to a friend who's retrofitting an older machine), will send some of that over.
Don't mind missing out on the book, I've got it already through Amazon last month

So you're still not afraid of having your mail 'jacked even after publicly announcing that you are about to send some cash in mail...?

Ahem! This is the Big Moose Saloon. And as The Moose I believe I am entitled to a 10% royalty for all monies collected on behalf of the JavaRanch. This fee is of course due in part to the extensive usage of my image on EVERY page on this site as well as shirts, hats and mugs.
Failure to make this payment will result in a suit brought on by the "Moose Protection of Website Imagery League" we have the best animal lawyers in the country -- so don't mess with us.
Thank you.

Nah. There's a lot of ways to send it anonymously or using a false address (maybe send it using the company as a return address, noone would catch that).
I'll make sure it gets nowhere near where you are, that should make it safe
