Hi Why should the examination fee be so high? I feel it should be nominal(should include only costs incurred for printing and mailing the Certificate). The purpose of conducting Certification exams should be to encourage Technology/talent and inturn promote the Product(Technology) and not from the business point of view. Thanks San

You are quite right, Sun tests are not exactly "inexpensive", but there are reasons. Acatually, it involves much more than mailing and printing certificates. The whole test has been developed very meticulously, the designing of the test objectives, preparing the database of thousands of question precisely covering those objectives, designing the test itself with user interface, bug detection, bug removal, development of the test software, getting rid of ambiguity (the test actually gets reviewed by language experts besides Java experts, to ensure that it actually says what it means) facilitating different test centers across various countries etc. etc. takes lot of efforts, and money. That could be one reson. Secondly, when the test is "not so cheap", more people tend to take it more seriously because they have paid a significant amount of their hard earned money to earn the honour. Unlike MCP tests which are neither difficult nor expensive, I know quite a few people who have taken those test precisely for this very reason. The intention perhaps, is to certify professional with reasonable dedication/seriousness and quality. And test themselves are not very easy, ask those who have taken them. Of course, I am not a Sun representative and these are only my views, perhaps they can justify it better. BTW, if you are in India, you can purchase voucher now at a discounted price. Everything Manish says is true, having spent two years creating, tweaking, delivering and updating a mere 180 mock exam questions I know how hard it is to create good unambiguous questions. If you read through the results forum you will see that people rarely complain about the quality of the questions. People who can create material like this do not come cheap (apart from me of course )... Many (most?) people who take the exam do not have English as a first language so they have to be very careful how they phrase questions. However I would go further to suggest that even if Sun didn't have to pay for the development of the exams they would be hard pressed to make a profit on the money you pay for the exam. By the time you have hired out a room in a training organisation (probably in the centre of a big town) for about two hours that is equipped with a computer and printer, paid for a member of staff to be present, processed the results back at Sun HQ, printed out the certificate, posted the badge etc in an envelope you will not have much change at all. If anyone makes a profit I would think it is the Sylvan people. The place where Sun is likely to make a profit is on their training courses. Marcus
