hi all,
why is there no implicit narrowing conversions for int constants for parameter passing in method calls to invoke methods?
where as it is there in assignment context?

You'd probably have to ask one of the language designers to get a meaningful answer, but I can't see what gaping maw is left unfilled by not providing for this, other than the satisfaction of academically complete design.

The designers do have a reason, see JLS 5.3

Method invocation conversions specifically do not include the implicit narrowing of integer constants which is part of assignment conversion (5.2). The designers of the Java programming language felt that including these implicit narrowing conversions would add additional complexity to the overloaded method matching resolution process (15.12.2).

In other words, trying to do it gave everyone a headache

Bah -- my answer is shorter. Their's has the mere advantage of being tactful.

It's a tiny ad. At least, that's what she said.
