Hi folks!
i'm developing a Mobile Stock Trading System as a class project.
for the off line features j2me is the ideal candidate. But for features that need dynamic content delivery WAP is also a candidate.
i need some good reasons why i should use j2me instead of wap for them.
Clients can perform following operations:
1-Get latest Stock Exchange Index
2-Place Order
3-Cancel Order
4-View Order Status
5-Keep track of their Protfolios
6-Keep track of their transactions
7-Update Profile and Contact Info
8-Register

For features 5 and 6 J2ME will be used.(standalone, offline features)
Now if you look at other features, there is some dynamic content delivery in them. So may be i can use WAP.
Please give me reasons why i should use J2ME instead of WAP.

i'll defer to those who actually code WAP, but i'll note the two are not competing technologies. saying that, i would hesitate to try to "merge" the two together in such a "tight" application. my motto always is, the simpler the better, and having to try to have the two technologies interact seamlessly might be harder than say, just coding everything in java, and using http to connect to back end servers. in addition, WAP i believe requires the use of specialized WAP gateways to access servers, and the security features for WAP are underwhelming (not to say that MIDP v1 is any different though, heheh).

Hi,
I am new to J2ME and would like to know why use J2ME if a technology like WAP is present. Is J2ME used only to develop applications in small devices & can WAP be used only in Cell Phones?

regards
Tony

There are a lot of differences between J2ME and WAP. Mainly J2ME is a "fat client" solution that requires more processing power but offers more flexibility. For some detailed discussions on the network structure and security of those two technologies. Refer to my two articles recently published on
JavaWorld
and
IBM developerWorks
