How to Send/Receive SMS using j2me program

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi all,
I doubt if anybody have faced this problem. Actually i want to make a program which will work like a phonebook in mobile.
Now what i want to do is:-
1- Program should be able to send / receive sms using j2me program.
2- It should be able to handle Incomming and outgoing calls . Means user can make a call using this application as well as receive the call.
Although this feature is inbuilt in all mobile phones but still i want to make a generic application which can work on all java enabled mobile phones.
Now i want to ask some questions regarding this program which are:-
1- Can we do the above task using standard j2me API given by sun.
2- if yes then how can the above task be done using j2me?
3- if no Is there any api available in j2me for the above tasks?
4- If no then is it possible to makle such type of application in j2me? If yes then how?
I will be obliged if somebody can help on the same.
Thanks in advance for the help and Waiting for the reply..
Rishi

Hi,
There is a Specification for Wireless Messaging API, that has a proposed final draft to 22 jul, 2002.
Details -> http://www.jcp.org/jsr/detail/120.jsp

Hi,
Nokia has announced SMS API for Java J2ME/MIDP.
Else you will need to use SMS APIs available for Java (JDK) such as jSMS.
Sun Microsystems is also announcing support for SMS in MIDP, check this url:-

Thanks a lot Barroso & javababa but still there is some more question again that is:-
1- Is these API will work for all mobile phones or they are specified for some specific phones only.
2- as thse API's are not included in the main j2me API then for using these into our application whether we will have to install them in to phone also or not.
3- If the answer to my q-2 is yes then how can we install an external API into the mobile phone.
With best regards,
Rishi

JSR 120 should be the standard. But like any other technology, whether it is available on a specific phone depends on whether the vendor supports it. As far as I understand, J2ME SMS APIs are just a wrapper on the phone's underlying SMS features. The individual vendor has to come up with an implementation.
It is like just MIDP. A phone vendor has to support it and put an implementation into their phones before you can use it.
If a vendor supports the SMS API, it will likely to include it on the device so you will have nothing else to install.

Hi Rishi,
The response of Michael is correct, i expect that this feature (SMS) be added on the specification soon.
